Design
rooted
in matter.
Furniture, objects and integrated systems. Designed and built in the workshop.
Projects with
structure and intent.
Every piece starts with the question of how space, material and use can work together.

Wood-fired outdoor sauna in Douglas and aspen. Compact enough for a small garden.
Coffee table from a single solid oak board. Minimal in line, legs and shelf removable.
Sideboard with curved corners. Oak veneer on birch plywood, corners and legs in solid walnut, drawer with finger joints.
Bedside table in solid walnut. Wireless charging built into the top, deep drawers with dovetail joints.
Craftsmanship
meets
engineering.
Studio Bartholomeus is the work of Bas Bartholomeus: designer, maker and engineer. After ten years in enterprise software back to the workshop, with the systems view of an engineer.
Every project starts with the real question: what belongs here, which material, how does the system fit the space.

Notes on
making and thinking.
Design is a hypothesis. Only in the workshop did it become clear why the radiator cover mounting needed to change.
For the garage door, larch was the obvious choice. It became Douglas anyway. The reason lies in trade dimensions and how the wood weathers.
A popular garden bench redesigned around one question: why is this uncomfortable? The answer was in the angle of the seat.
